The topic 007Cheater linked to in an earlier news post has had some interesting info posted in it by gottahavitt, about the DivX on Dreamcast project:

“I have tried to set expectations for this that are realistic, however I cannot say for sure at the moment what performance wil be. It will NOT perform as well as a decent Desktop, of that I have little doubt, I am currenlty limiting all expectations to 320X240(played in fullscreen) and hpefully a decent bitrate. The decoder is limited to 496X496 anyway so that would be the absolute maximum for the forseeable future however I doubt video at that resolution is feasible.

I might as well give a little update as to where this stands, I am currently able to play a 320X240 30fps 300kbps clip in fullscreen mode with low end audio and basically no drops, so long as I keep the clip below the cache size. The CD-ROM is hindering performance at the moment and I am still search for a better algorithm for disk access.

I am surprised how nice a 300kbps clip looks when played in fullscreen on the DreamCast. At 500kbps the clips starts to stagger, but again a ot of that is due to disk access.
