Smeg News

Heliophobe has updated his site with this news:

If you’ve followed dcemulation.org you know this already, but it turns out there was no problem with my emulator with selfbooting other than that I had been using an IP.BIN from the Echelon selfboot kit, as well as using binhack to scramble my binary. These IP.BIN’s are hacked to cause the Dreamcast BIOS to always report that a GD-Rom is in the drive, so as to allow copy software to run from a CD-Rom. This confounds libdream, however, which expects to find a CD-Rom in the drive, so the all the disc reading routines fail. The solution is to use an IP.BIN from DreamSMS (NesterDC‘s should work as well), and steer clear of Binhack. Using an unhacked IP.BIN and marcus comstedt’s scramble program, I was able to make a working selfboot Smeg disc with roms, no problem.Okay, I said ‘a few days’ about a week and a half ago. Since then I took it upon myself to rewrite the sound engine entirely, which, accurate though it was, was also buggy. Someone even suggested that I map ‘Reset Audio’ to one of the paddle buttons, because it happened so often to them. That was a pretty good sign it needed to be fixed, so it’s fixed. No more audio freezes, no more glitches in speech/sampled sound playback (all games seem perfect in that regard now). Consequently, no more ‘Reset Audio’ menu option, it should no longer be needed.I’ve also gotten a lot of requests for VMU save, and so I’ve started working on that. The next Smeg was supposed to be nothing more than a bugfix, but I think I’ll work it in -if- I find that my attempt is successful. Consequently, the next release will have a private beta period, as enough new code will be added to warrant beta testing. To become a beta tester, just email me at the address at the bottom of the page. By agreeing to become a beta tester you agree not to redistribute betas, and that you understand you may be making some coasters and be willing to accept that.
